TIMBER LIMITLESS

  • Description

Cambridge South Station

A new station has been constructed in Cambridge South to meet growing demand, designed with sustainability and user accessibility at its core. One standout feature of the station is the extensive use of solid wood in both the building and the platform canopies. For durability in its exposed setting, the glulam and cross-laminated timber structures have been crafted from larch wood, chosen specifically for its resilience to weathering and ability to meet stringent service life requirements.

Serving as a vital transport link for the expanding Cambridge Biomedical Campus and accommodating anticipated growth at the University of Cambridge, the station’s large capacity and modern infrastructure will support high passenger volumes with ease. In line with its green goals, the station is intentionally car-free, promoting environmentally friendly travel options across the region.

Reflecting a commitment to sustainability, Cambridge South Station is set to feature what may become the largest and most sustainable biodiverse station roof in the UK. However, installation presented challenges. Given the proximity to live rail lines, strict restrictions required multiple possession weekends during which lines were closed and power shut down. During these closures, installation crews operated around the clock in shifts to complete the work efficiently.
